CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY
It is necessary to be free of infection. Once you send your documentation and required tests, the doctor will determine if you are an eligible candidate for this procedure.
Depending on the efforts of the patient the succes of the post operative progress can vary.

Hip replacement

Consists of replacing diseased or damaged parts of the hip joint with metal and plastic prosthetic devices. It is common to remove tumors, to relieve severe pain in the hip from injury or arthritis that usually can limit mobility. The main cause can be arthritis of the hip that causes pain, stiffness, and instability that may even cause restricted motion. For young people there is a high chance that they may require a second replacement during their lifetime, due to their more active life.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCEDURE
Under anesthesia (chosen by the anesthesiologist) the procedure is performed to replace the hipbone with a prosthesis. It will be required to wear pressure stockings and a drainage tube some days after the surgery. Quality of the bone, your activity and your age will affect in the election of materials or fixing techniques.
BENEFITS
  • Relief of severe pain

  • Improve stability and flexibility

  • Reduction of stiffness

  • Improve joint mobility
ALTERNATIVES
Prolonged delay of surgery may cause deterioration of joint tissue and the progression of diseases such as osteoarthritis, this means pain and increasing mobility reduction. Arthritis cannot be cured, you can control their symptoms but it is only a temporary solution. For people under 55, more active or with higher bone quality, hip resurfacing is an alternative.

Alternatives may be discussed with your surgeon, e.g.

Losing weight, stopping strenous exercise, use of a walking stick, some exercises for muscular strength around the knee, walking aids such as a walking stick or cane or fitting with specialized braces An exercise program to strengthen the muscles to reduce pain and inflammation.

Some drugs can reduce inflamation and pain.
RISKS
Every procedure has its own risks. 95% of patients will have no complication during a procedure, but it is necessary to know about them. It is important to compare risks to potential benefits.

COMMONS RISKS (2-5 PATIENTS OUT OF 100)
  • Thrombosis (blood clots in the legs)
  • Dislocation
  • Retention of urine
  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Leg length difference

LESS COMMONS RISKS (1-2 PATIENTS OUT OF 100)
  • Infection occurring around the joint years after the surgery
  • Nerve damage
RARE RISKS (LESS THAN 1 PATIENT OUT OF 100)
  • Infection requiring antibiotics and in some cases hospitalization
  • Artery damage
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Loosening or dislocation of the prosthetic devices
POST-OPERATIVE CARE
After spending a few days in hospital, doctors will give advice about general exercises.
During 3 months is necessary to follow some precautions to avoid hip dislocation. During six weeks is not recommended to stand or drive for a long time. Your walking progress depend on your own age, health and exercises. The duration of recovery to be fully comfortable again can vary from person to person, from 6 to 8 weeks.
